Elegant bamboo trees provide a dignified entrance, leading to a mature, beautifully maintained Japanese garden, with a waterfall and pond, and the hotel location had been to the reign of Emperor Goshirakawa.

We re-interpreted Japanese traditional architecture, Machiya into modern style, with narrow entrance and an impressive 38meters long corridor.

Hotel Ethnography is a group of boutique hotels built by Windows to Japan - a well-established travel agency that prides itself on taking good care of its customers’ needs. "Hotel Ethnography" (Cultural Anthropology - Ethnography) - conveys our ideal of connecting our guests with an assortment of different people who have lived experience within the city and can provide an intimate connection to the surrounding history, nature, and culture by introducing them to the many deeply-rooted traditions and spirit of craftsmanship that still permeates within the hearts of the people living within the city.

ŌHARA-JUKU

Some Buddhist monasteries still provide today the shukubō (“hostelry”) service to pilgrims,
but also—a lesser known fact—to the laymen who wish to retreat from the world. Those monasteries are the perfect refuge for isolation, introspection, and a form of renunciation.

Starting from this idea, ŌHARA–JUKU revisited the shukubō concept to offer travellers a new form of retreat,
where comfort and beauty are not banned, but emphasized.

Our private Machiya, located in the center of Kyōto, offers contemplation, exchange, meditation, inspiration, and serenity.
